(KTLA) - A charter school in Boyle Heights, California, will be sending its entire graduating class off to four-year universities for the fourth time in five years.Forty-five seniors at Collegiate Charter High School of Los Angeles were celebrated earlier this month with a special "Senior Signing Day" ceremony to reveal which schools they plan to attend in the coming year. The ceremony holds special weight for Collegiate educators as almost all of the graduating seniors come from low-income homes, many of which are Spanish-speaking immigrant families. The Boyle Heights school is in the middle of one of the densest populations of Latino families that live at or below the poverty level in the nation. The majority of seniors who will be attending college next year will be the first in their families to do so, the school said, and many are the first in their families to graduate from high school at all. As Colorado continues to grapple with its state behavioral health crisis — too many in need, without enough to give it — state officials are hoping $14,000 will help strengthen the ranks of needed nurses. The Colorado Department of Human Services is offering that as a hiring bonus to people willing to work in mental health facilities in Pueblo and the Fort Logan facility in Denver. They’re trying to fill some 200 positions that officials said opened as workers pursued pandemic-era pay increases elsewhere and exited due to burnout.“Because of the nursing shortage, we’ve had 100 beds available, but they’re not open,” Leora Joseph, director of the Office of Behavioral Health within the Colorado Department of Human Services. “This isn’t a bed crisis, it’s a staffing crisis.”In 2022, for example, Joseph said they would lose multiple nurses every month. They were able to hire just four replacements. To compensate, they relie...Jeep smashes into parked trucks, creating vehicle fire before rolling over twice in Woodland Hills

Over the past half-decade, California lawmakers have signed off on almost a hundred laws seeking to alleviate the state’s deepening housing crisis. Yet developers still aren’t building anywhere near enough affordably priced homes for everyone who needs them. Now, a state assemblymember from San Jose is pushing a novel proposal he believes could finally jump-start affordable housing development by allowing the state government to get into the homebuilding business.Alex Lee, a 27-year-old Democrat, has written a bill that would create a state agency to develop “social housing” — publicly owned housing that would be affordable for people with a range of income levels. While skeptics may dismiss the idea as a progressive pipe dream doomed to repeat the failures of underfunded federal public housing programs, Lee points out that California agencies already hire developers to build housing at universities and other public property across the state.“Wouldn...Latest news
