‘One of us’: Club pro Michael Block scores one for working man at PGA Championship

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:01:31 GMT

By WILL GRAVES (AP Sports Writer)PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Michael Block is supposed to work on Monday, just like nearly every other PGA club professional this time of year. The 46-year-old’s daily routine at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Southern California is a mixture of lessons and paperwork. It’s typically followed by an early evening visit from teenage sons Dylan and Ethan, aspiring golfers who can already blow it way past their dad off the tee.Block wouldn’t have it any other way. The lure of being a touring professional vanished long ago. The appeal of chasing a PGA Tour card was heavily outweighed by a steady paycheck that lets him play and teach the game he loves without worrying about missing a mortgage payment.Besides, there’s still room to dream. Room to have rounds like the one Block put together on Friday at the PGA Championship, when his name floated near the top of the leaderboard at Oak Hill surrounded by players far more famous.Hitting ball...

He has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the charges.Santos’ lawyer and an aide did not immediately respond to CNN’s inquiries on Friday evening.Questions long have swirled about the identity of Santos’ campaign treasurer. Defending champ Justin Thomas makes cut on number at PGA Championship

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:01:31 GMT

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Forget defending his PGA Championship title. Justin Thomas had to scramble on his final hole to simply make the cut at Oak Hill on Friday. Two former PGA champions, Jason Day and Jimmy Walker, are out.So is Talor Gooch, whose failure to make the cut at 5-over 145 cost him a chance to earn a spot in the U.S. Open next month. Gooch is ranked 63rd in the world, with the U.S. Open inviting the top 60 after this week. And leave it to Phil Mickelson to correctly predict he’d still be playing this weekend after a second-round score of 2-over 72 pushed his two-round total to 145.The 156-man field was slashed to 76 players for the final two rounds.Thomas, ranked 13th in the world, turned making the cut into an adventure. He was 4 over on the 18th tee and his drive landed landed in a fairway bunker. His first attempt caught the lip and stayed in the sand. He punched the ball within 95 yards of the hole on his second attempt and eventually made an 8-foot putt for bogey.Jor...

Mickelson relieved to make PGA Championship cut after 2nd-round struggles

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:01:31 GMT

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — After plunking a tee shot in the water, and missing 10 fairways and six greens in regulation, Phil Mickelson closed a haphazard second round at the PGA Championship on Friday clinging to the one positive he could find.Poorly as Lefty played in carding a 2-over 72 that put him at 5-over 145 at Oak Hill, Mickelson anticipated he did enough to make the cut.“I’m just a fraction off. This is as bad as I’ve played in a long time,” Mickelson said. “And yet, I’m still here on the weekend and I have a chance to turn it around.”The two-time PGA Championship winner, who teed off in the morning, ultimately made the cut on the number, one of 76 players advancing to the weekend. And it wouldn’t be extraordinary for Mickelson, who has won 45 PGA Tour events and six majors, to mount a charge. He did so as recently as the Masters last month, when he shot a fourth-round low of 7-under 65 to finish in a tie for second with Brooks Koepka.Yet Mickelson’s surge at Augusta seems more...
