Three takeaways from Liam Hendriks’ big night on the South Side for the Chicago White Sox.1. The White Sox provided Hendriks with a closer-like entrance in the eighth inning of his emotional return to the mound Monday night at Sox Park. The strobe lights were in full effect. The video boards were all-Liam. The walk-in music, an EDM version of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” was turned up to 11.Only one thing was missing. The Sox trailed the Los Angeles Angels 4-3, so it wasn’t a save situation.Manager Pedro Grifol said before the game Hendriks would not be used as a closer to get his feet wet in his first game back. Hendriks did just that, showing glimpses of himself while also allowing a pair of runs and making the Sox comeback attempt more difficult in a 6-4 loss. Now that his feet have officially been drenched, will Hendriks move back into the role he’s most comfortable in — and the one the Sox need to fill if they intend on actually contending...

By Carla Vigos, Laguna Woods GlobeSummertime brings outdoor eating, parties, graduations, Father’s Day and Fourth of July celebrations.I took a trip to Greece about 10 years ago. Kalamata olives, lemons and olive oils were in abundance in the foods I enjoyed. This inspired me to make a simple non-mayonnaise potato salad safe for outdoor parties.Secondly, previously I wasn’t a fan of turnips, but this easy recipe changed my mind. I plated them both on a beautiful dish I had bought in Corfu. See the images of North Korea’s launch pad activity as it prepares its first spy satellite

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Tuesday it would launch its first military spy satellite in June and described space-based reconnaissance as crucial for monitoring U.S. “reckless” military exercises with South Korea. The statement came a day after North Korea notified Japan’s coast guard that the launch, sometime between May 31 and June 11, might affect waters in the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and east of the Philippines’ Luzon Island. Japan’s defense minister warned its forces to shoot down the satellite or debris if any entered Japanese territory, and its coast guard issued a safety warning for ships that would be in the affected seas during the expected launch, citing a risk of falling debris. While North Korea’s rivals have condemned the country’s planned launch as a banned test of ballistic missile technology, it’s less clear whether the satellite itself is advanced enough to support the North’s stated goals of tracking and monitoring U.S. and South Korean...

NATO to send 700 more troops to Kosovo to help quell violent protests

OSLO, Norway (AP) — NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday that the military organization has sent 700 more troops to Kosovo to help quell violent protests and has put another battalion on standby in case the riots spread.“We have decided to deploy 700 more troops from the operational reserve force for Western Balkans and to put an additional battalion of reserve forces on high readiness so they can also be deployed if needed. These are prudent steps,” Stoltenberg told reporters in Oslo, after talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. A battalion typically ranges from 300 to around 1,000 troops.Stoltenberg condemned the violence in Kosovo, saying that “such attacks are unacceptable and must stop.” He warned that NATO troops “will take all necessary actions to maintain a safe and secure environment for all citizens in Kosovo.”He urged both sides to take steps to deescalate, refrain from “further irresponsible behavior,” and to return to EU-backed talks on im...

Canadian Afghan advisers take government to court over alleged discrimination

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 03:54:06 GMT

OTTAWA — Two Canadians who served the military in Afghanistan are suing the federal government over alleged discrimination for failing to rescue their family members from the Taliban. The federal government recently created a program to ensure the families of Canadians who served as language and cultural advisers in Afghanistan are brought to safety. But the criteria is so restrictive it doesn’t apply to some family members who were threatened because of their connection to Canada’s military efforts before the Taliban takeover in August 2021. In their lawsuit, the advisers compare the plight of their family members to that of Ukrainians, who were offered an unlimited number of temporary visas to flee the Russian invasion and work or study in Canada.Lawyer Nicholas Pope says Ukrainians have been offered better immigration benefits, even though the Afghans he represents are facing just as much danger. The federal government hasn’t yet responded to the court filing, bu...

LONDON — Scientists and tech industry leaders, including high-level executives at Microsoft and Google, issued a new warning Tuesday about the perils that artificial intelligence poses to humankind. “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” the statement said. Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, and Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist known as the godfather of artificial intelligence, were among the hundreds of leading figures who signed the statement, which was posted on the Center for AI Safety’s website.Worries about artificial intelligence systems outsmarting humans and running wild have intensified with the rise of a new generation of highly capable AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. It has sent countries around the world scrambling to come up with regulations for the developing technology, with the European Union blazing the trail with its AI Act expected to be approved...

Malta says it didn’t find migrant boat in distress alerted by NGOs

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Authorities on the European island nation of Malta have contested accusations made by a group of nongovernmental organizations a day earlier regarding a migrant boat in distress.“Following multiple verifications of reported position through multiple searches, no boat was sighted in the reported position,” the Armed Forces of Malta said in an email to The Associated Press on Tuesday. On Monday, four rescue groups operating in the central Mediterranean accused Maltese authorities of coordinating the return of around 500 people to eastern Libya where they were subsequently imprisoned, in violation of international maritime law.The group of migrants, including 55 children and pregnant women, had been trying to reach Europe on May 23 aboard a rusty iron fishing vessel when they reported to Alarm Phone — a hotline for migrants in distress — that they were adrift and taking in water, according to the NGO.Communicating by satellite phone, the migrants shared their GPS...

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (AP) — Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz is scheduled to sign a bill Tuesday that legalizes recreational marijuana for people over the age of 21, making Minnesota the 23rd state to legalize the substance for adults.Former Gov. Jesse Ventura, who supported legalization when he served from 1999-2003, is expected to attend the signing ceremony. Walz said in November that Ventura would be invited because Ventura was one of the first governors in the country to support legalization.Under the new measure, it would become legal by Aug. 1 to possess, use and grow marijuana at home. Possession of cannabis flower would be limited to 2 pounds (0.9 kilos) at home and 2 ounces (56 grams) in public. Stricter caps would be placed on cannabis products with concentrated THC. Retail sales at dispensaries would probably be at least a year away. Once licensed, stores would charge sales tax plus a 10% cannabis tax.Minnesotans who have been convicted of misdemeanor or petty misdemean...
