Alexander Cary won an Emmy Award for his work on the television show "Homeland" in part by writing what he knows. In the hit Showtime program, Carrie Mathison and Saul Berenson are no strangers to explosions and their gruesome aftermath. As it turns out, neither is Cary. Before his career in Hollywood, Cary was a soldier, serving in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and in Iraq during the Gulf War.When he sat down with KTLA's Frank Buckley on "Frank Buckley Interviews" to discuss his newest project, MGM+'s "A Spy Among Friends," Cary also opened up about the time he helped save a fellow soldier's life in Northern Ireland.Cary, a young officer in the Scots Guards in the British Army, served as commander of the Army's Quick Reaction Force in South Armagh in the 1980s. One day, when Cary was on patrol in a helicopter with the QRF, the heard reports of British soldiers being struck by mortar fire from the Irish Republican Army."We responded and flew into that situation and landed," he ...

Kurtenbach: There’s bad luck, then there’s Oakland luck — five more thoughts on the A’s relocation farce

I can continue to point out that A’s owner John Fisher is a soulless ghoul or that team president Dave Kaval is a charlatan, but, let’s be honest, it’s becoming reductive. There is plenty of blame to go around, after all.The A’s will move to Las Vegas (at some point) primarily because of those two mountebanks, but systems and people also enabled them. Those two weren’t clever enough to make this happen on their own. This by no means exonerates them, but when the A’s leave Oakland — and that day can’t come soon enough — there will be green blood on more hands than just Fisher and Kaval’s.Related ArticlesOakland Athletics | SF Giants issue statement on A’s, and a former Athletic talks Coliseum: ‘I loved every aspect of it’ Oakland Athletics | How much do the A’s matter to Oakland’s identity? Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:30:00 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Three goals for Riyad Mahrez have protected Manchester City’s bid for three trophies. The Algerian forward’s hat trick in a 3-0 win against Sheffield United on Saturday advanced City to the FA Cup final. Having secured a place in the semifinals of the Champions League this week, Pep Guardiola’s team took another step toward a treble with a routine victory at Wembley Stadium. The FA Cup final in June will be against Manchester United or Brighton. City can also seize control of the English Premier League title race against leader Arsenal on Wednesday. In City’s current mood, it is difficult to see anyone stopping the defending league champion from emulating Manchester United’s 1999 treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup glory.Certainly not second-division side Sheffield, whose chance of an historic FA Cup shock was effectively ended in the 43rd minute when Mahrez struck from the penalty spot after Daniel Jebbison fouled Bernard...

MILAN (AP) — Lazio failed to consolidate second spot in Serie A after it was beaten by mid-table Torino 1-0 on Saturday to end a run of four straight wins.Ivan Ilić netted the only goal two minutes before halftime to help Torino to its first win in five matches. The result left Lazio two points above third-placed Juventus, which could cap a fantastic week with a win over runaway leader Napoli on Sunday. Juventus saw its 15-point penalty suspended on Thursday and also reached the Europa League semifinals.Lazio struggled to find its rhythm at the Stadio Olimpico. It did have a chance in the 38th minute with a free kick from a dangerous position but Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić comfortably saved the attempt from his brother Sergej Milinković-Savić.Moments later, Torino broke the deadlock when Ilić steered the ball through Sergej Milinković-Savić and past the diving Ivan Provedel.Lazio increased its pressing after the interval and even sent on Ciro Immobile.
